Canvas Guidance: Syncing the calendar in Canvas to mail clients

Users can sync the Canvas calendar to multiple external calendars

You can connect, or sync, your calendar in Canvas with another external calendar such as Outlook or on iCal on a Mac. Keep in mind that the Canvas calendar sync includes all the courses you are enrolled in Canvas. If you would like to see events from a specific course in Canvas, the best way to to this is via the Calendar within canvas. Click here for more information about the Canvas calendar.

The Canvas calendar iCal feed is located in the right sidebar of your Calendar in Canvas. After clicking this, copy the iCal feed link and go to the external calendar of your choice.

You can import the iCal feed using the URL for this internet calendar to subscribe to any calendar app that accepts the iCal format, such as Google Calendar Links to an external site., Apple Calendar Links to an external site.  Links to an external site.and Outlook.com Links to an external site.; these links provide guidance on setting this sync up. 

Since Canvas course calendars are subject to change during the course, we do not recommend you downloading and uploading the iCal file since that is static and won't update as needed.

External calendars such as Outlook periodically updates but may take up to 24 hours to sync with the Canvas Calendar; therefore, a Canvas update may not be immediately visible. However, in apple products you can set the iCal feed to auto-refresh at various intervals, including every 5 minutes. You can also download the calendar feed as an ICS file however, this will not update.

The iCal feed will contain events and assignments from all of your Canvas course calendars. Please note that the iCal sync does not include to do dates associated with pages in Canvas although these dates do appear on the Canvas calendar. For this reason, School of Medicine courses avoid using to do dates associated with pages.
