In Canvas, you can set image options so a larger image opens in a new tab (the new tab is still within the Canvas course). You can add a small image on the page, then link to a larger image in a new tab. While this isn't a pop-up, this approach allows for users to view a larger image more easily than coding with HTML skills and avoids pop-up blockers. If you you use this option, we suggest using descriptive file names because the file name is visible on the new tab.

Steps

Adding a link to an image for expanded view

1. Go to the page and click edit

2. Click on the image link and select "Image Options" then copy the Alt Text so you have the file name of the image. Then close out or click the X in the upper right corder.

3. Back in the page, put your curser in the space where you want to add a link to expand the image, then click the image icon in the rich text editor and select "Course Images." Search for the image name that you previously copied, then select the image to add it to the page. Click done. You will now have two of the same images. The second image you will change to a link in the next step.

4. Select the second image and click "Image Options"

5. Select the radio button for "Display Test Link" (Opens in a new tab) and click done.

6. On the page at the bottom right, click save.
